Adding to the list of Japanese things Taiwan likes, is Gachapon (轉蛋 / zhuai dan).
Gachapon (ガチャポン), gashapon (ガシャポン), and gacha (ガチャ) are similar terms used to describe the highly popularized vending machines and their contents. Unlike most vending machines which exist for distributing food, gachapon machines are used to produce toys and small trinkets.
Like many of the machines in the US, you often won’t know what you’re getting exactly until you turn the characteristic crank and open the container.
Unlike their US counterparts, the toys one can get from these machines are often fairly high in quality. Some of these toys are even valued as collector items.
Because of the cuteness, quality, and gambling aspect to these machines, they remain fairly popular with teens and adults-alike, looking to acquire a more unique article of expression.
